What is VOIP? VOIP is an acronym that stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. In a nutshell what happens is you speak into a regular phone like you are using now. Either your phone or in house VOIP telephone system will convert your analog voice into a digital signal and break it down in small pieces of data known as packets. These packets will travel across the internet, often taking different routes. These packets will use embedded instructions to re-assemble themselves in the correct order and then be converted back into an analog signal on the other person's telephone. The advantage this has over current communications methods is it's very fast, very efficient and very cheap. Because this type of communication doesn't require a dedicated line and can be shared among hundreds of people it is significantly better than traditional analog communications.
