Voip Internet calling is one of the most revolutionary developments to occur in the telecommunications industry. Many industry experts expect that within the next 20 years VOIP calling will revolutionize telephone service the way that wireless communication did in the 1990's.

Initially VOIP communications was used on personal computers. People used computers equipped with a microphone and speaker to communicate with each other, free of charge. It didn't matter if they were around the block, across town, across the country or on the other side of the world. The only thing needed was an internet connection. However in the days before most businesses and home had high speed internet connections the quality was poor. It had a tendency to choppy and inconsistent in quality. As internet connections became more stable and dependable the quality of VOIP calls improved. In fact today the quality is equal to or better than standard voice calls.

Most people however want to talk on a "normal" phone, and not a computer. Voip companies spent large amounts of capital developing traditional phones that would interface with VOIP telephone systems. In addition they also have newer more feature laden phones that are only usable on VOIP systems. With this change people were able to stop focusing on the obstacle the interface was creating and start to bring the phones into their homes and offices.

As of this writing we are at the very beginning of the VOIP telephone revolution. As the systems gain wider acceptance we can look forward to easier and less expensive calling solutions. Additionally we can also look forward to interfacing and communicating with other appliances in our homes in ways we never dreamed of.
