SMS Cell Phones
The Short Message System or SMS allows small messages of text to be sent from one cellular phone to another. For SMS messages to work both cellular phones have to be using a GSM wireless carrier. SMS communication will also be compatible with the new 3G wireless networks being developed.
SMS originated in Finland and is very popular in Europe and Japan. This popularity is surprising as it can often cost between $0.20 to $0.30 per message. In the United States most plans include an allotment of SMS messages per month with minimum overage charges of $0.05 - $0.10 per message. The only market segment that seems to use SMS is 12-18 year olds. Additionally many Television Shows like American Idol offer interactivity using SMS messages. Corporate and Enterprise level accounts prefer direct connect or GPRS communications to SMS.
