Cell Phones and Children
Cellular Phone companies are looking for the next untapped market, and they're looking at children. While most are targeting the 'tween market' (teens and preteens ages 12-15) some are targeting children as young as 8 years. This is causing concerns form many parents and schools alike.
Opinions on allowing cellular phones in school vary widely from one district to another. Some schools see them as disruptive to the learning environment. Others schools see them as a valuable safety tools useful to the students and to parents. Almost no schools allow them to be on or used during class, some will allow students to wear them while others require that they be kept inside of lockers during the day.
Many parents share similar concerns. Parents, who support cell phones say they are an invaluable safety tool, allow students to get in touch with friends or family if they find themselves in a dangerous or uncomfortable circumstance. Parents who are opposed to them often feel their children are simply responding to peer pressure to emulate the 'in style' cliques that occur in every school. The most sought after phones are the smallest, fashionable, or feature laden models. These models often cost between $100 and $300. While adding extra line to family plan usually costs between $10 and $15 a month. The teenagers are the most prone to going over monthly minute limits incurring large overage charges. Many parents have been forced to go with limited usage or prepaid calling plans.
In then end the decision rests with the parent. You need to check with the school first to make sure you aren't breaking any regulations. Then decide if your child is mature enough to handle the responsibility of an open calling plan or if they need the enforced discipline of prepaid or limited calling plan. You should also weigh any safety concerns you may have. For many parents $10 extra a month is worth the piece of mind of knowing their children can reach them quickly and easily if need be
